Student leaders and former student leaders from the larger Gusii Region yesterday held a consultative meeting in SONIC hotel Kisii on the role youths from the region can play in supporting the development of the two counties (Nyamira and Kisii Counties). The meeting which was chaired by Eng Muma Ronald assisted by Obare Thomas, Essy okenyuri and Duke Mainga brought together a number of young leaders from the region.
Represented in the meeting were student leaders and former student leaders from; Kisii University, Egerton University, Moi University, University of Nairobi, Technical University of Mombasa, Catholic University, Maasai Mara University, Maseno University, Chuka University, Kenyatta University, South Eastern University, JKUAT, Pwani University among others.
During the meeting, the young leaders discussed on how they can in campus and national politics address poor leadership and corruption which has led to underdevelopment in two counties and dispatchment of bursaries to needy students. The leaders also agreed to launch an HIV, drug and substance use and abuse awareness campaign and entrepreneurial training programmes.
A similar meeting is scheduled to be held early January 2015.
Elsewhere on 26th December 2014, a peacefully organized university and college students meeting in Nyamira County was disrupted by police who were working on orders from top County officials. An order was also given to all executive hotels in Nyamira County not to allow the group of student leaders to hold any meeting. The student leaders have raised an alarm over how millions of money are being spent on fake projects without the knowledge of the residents a case which is worrying the county officials.
