What follows are official 2019 terms dates for Primary schools, High or Secondary schools and colleges in Kenya. That is closing and opening terms dates. You can also check: 2020 School Calendar.

Ministry of education 2019 Term Dates for Schools in Kenya

The term dates provided below were issued by the ministry of education. The 2018 school calendar will run for a period of 38 weeks.

2019 Pre-primary and primary schools terms dates

  • Term 1: Opening dates (3rd January 2019), Closing Dates (5th April 2019) (First term, will run for14 weeks) (First term Half-term begins on February 18 to 24th)
  • Term 2: Opening dates (29th April 2019), Closing Dates (2nd August 2019) (second term Half-term begins on June 17th to 23rd)
  • Term 3: Opening dates (2nd September 2019), Closing Dates (25th October 2019)
  • 2019 KCPE: KCPE: 28th October 2018-2nd November 2019

2019 Secondary schools term dates (opening and closing

  • Term 1: Opening dates (3rd January 2019), Closing Dates (5th April 2019) (First term, will run for14 weeks) (First term Half-term begins on February 18 to 24th)
  • Term 2: Opening dates (29th April 2019), Closing Dates (2nd August 2019) (second term Half-term begins on June 17th to 23rd)
  • Term 3: Opening dates (2nd September 2019), Closing Dates (25th October 2019)
  • 2019 KCSE Dates: November 4th to 29th

UPDATE: Term 3 opening dates  have been rescheduled due to census. We have updated the new dates accordingly. This also means that number of study weeks will also be affected.

Points to Note about 2019 School Calendar

  • There will be no mid break in third term (half term)
  • The secondary school dates apply to colleges
  • Secondary school third term will run for 9 weeks while primary school 3 rd term will run for 8 weeks

    Why is Mombasa mainland academy closes the school on 7th of August.this is even later than the government date?

    It is good that the term dates are out, but my question is: Why do the ministry gives more time on holidays compared to the learning weeks.? The Ministry should leave the term dates as it was previously. Thnk You

    secondary students are well behaved, they can behave while the K.C.S.E is on, what is the work of the security officers?? together with teachers they can maintain law and order, twonths at home for the learners is alot. these students misbehave and its better if we keep them at school.

    After K.C.P.E the primary learners should be going back to school for one month. you can imagin all those 10 weeks doing nothing at home. infact before matiang’i came as the CS the system of education was very good. learners were not staying at home for that long.

    If that minstry have given out that midterm date of 18th to 24th,why is PCEA MARTYS BAHATI NRB why are they going there midterm on 28th,thanx

    I am confused.
    You say Term 1 is 14 weeks but the children are only in the classroom with their teachers for 12 weeks and 2 days (and I think we all know how little learning happened in most schools on those first two days in January)
    Your notes also say that Secondary schools will run for 10 weeks in Term 3 and yet you have given the same opening and closing dates for both Primary and Secondary (9wks for both)
    So having robbed primary and secondary pupils of 3 weeks education when you decided to close schools early just to stop the cheating in exams (unheard of practice in the west/developed world) you are now going to rob them of a further 2 weeks education by giving them the full half term but leaving the end of term breaks the same 3 weeks as before.
    I find it hard to imagine how the children of Kenya in 2019 are going to achieve in 32 weeks in the classroom what used to take them and their teachers 38 or even 39 weeks back in 2015? Is that why the new curriculum and text books are so shallow. How many Kenyan ministers have their children learning in the Kenyan Government schools?
    Children in the US still receive 36 weeks in the classroom with their teachers.
    Children in the UK receive 38 weeks in the classroom with their teachers and those teachers are expected to do their training days on an additional 5 days during the year.
    This is very sad and very short-sighted. The children in the rurals who are sent home for 10 weeks at the end of the school year, really suffer and forget so much during that long break.

      I really comply with you, actually us teachers we are facing hard time, mostly leaving scholars in dilemma please the ministry must check on that, Let the system being as it was in those days 2015, This new curriculum is not good at all, much respect and regards
