Transnzoia County is situated between the Nzoia River and Mount Elgon, 380 kilometers northwest of Nairobi. The county's dominant communities are the Luhya and Kalenjin, with other communities including Kikuyu, Kisii, Luo, Teso, and Turkana. The excellent soils and favourable climatic conditions favour crop production of many varieties, with the county particularly well recognized for large-scale maize cultivation. The county is referred to as the basket of Kenya for its role in food production in the country.It is also is home to two of Kenya's five water towers, Mt. Elgon and Cherangany Hills, as well as two of its national parks.
