NTSA Driving license categories and classes in Kenya, vehicle permitted to drive, requirements and driving school tuition fee.

1. Category A

AM (Moped)

• Age:  16 years minimum
• Passengers: No
• Type:  Motorcycle
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 7,500 (average)

A1 (Light Motorcycle)

• Age: 18 years minimum
• Passengers: Yes (maximum load 60 Kg)
• Type: Motorcycle
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 7,500 (Average)

A2 (Motorcycle taxi, Couriers and 3-wheelers)

• Age: 18 years minimum
• Passengers: Yes (maximum load 100 Kg)
• Type: Motorcycle
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 7,500 (Average)

A3 (Motorcycle Three Wheelers)

• Age: 18 years minimum
• Passengers: Maximum 3
• Type: Motorcycle
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 7,500(Average)

2. Category B

B1 (Light Vehicle Automatic)

• Age: 18 years minimum
• Passengers: Maximum 7
• Type: Car
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 13,500 (Average)

B2 (Light Vehicle)

• Age: 18 years minimum
• Passengers: No
• Type: Car
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 13,500 (Average)

B3 (Professional)

• Age: 21 minimum
• Passengers: Maximum 7
• Type: Car
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 10,000 (Average)

3. Category C

C1 (Light Truck)

• Age: 22 – 65 years (with B2 license for at least 2 years)
• Passengers: No
• Type: Truck
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 14,500 (Average)

C (Medium Truck)

• Age: 24 -65 years (with 2 years experience of driving category C1)
• Passengers: No
• Type: Truck
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 14,500(Average)

CE (Heavy Truck with Trailer)

• Age: 28 – 65 years (with 4 years experience of driving category C)
• Passengers: No
• Type: Heavy Truck (articulated)
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 27,000 (Average)

CD (Heavy Good Vehicle for Transportation of Hazardous Materials)

• Age: 30 – 65 years (with 2 years experience of driving category CE)
• Passengers: No
• Type: Heavy Truck (articulated)
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 27,000 (Average)

4. Category D

D1 (Van)

• Age: 22 – 65 years
• Passengers: Maximum 14
• Type: Van
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 10,000 (Average)

D2 (Minibus)

• Age: 25 – 65 years (with 3 years experience of driving category D1)
• Passengers: 14 to 32
• Type: Bus
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 10,000(Average)

D3 (Large Bus)

• Age: 30 – 65 years (with 3 years experience of driving category D2)
• Passengers: 33 or more
• Type: Bus
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 10,000(Average)

D4

• Age: Maximum 65 years (with 3 years experience of Driving category D3)
• Passengers: Yes
• Type: Articulated Bus
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 10,000(Average)

5. Category E

• Age: 21 – 65 years (Licensed as EC1, EC, ECE, ED, ED1, ED2 and ECD3)
• Passengers: yes
• Type: Special Professional

6. Category F (Persons with Disability)

• Age: 18 years minimum (must have valid medical certificate, assessment report or disability certificate)
• Type: Can drive any vehicle that one is qualified.

7. Category G

Passengers: No

• Type: Industrial, Construction and Agricultural (Plants and Equipment operator)
• Driving Course Cost: Ksh. 45,000 (Average)
