Gor Mahia’s match against Murang’a brought all eyes onto the team as coach Jonathan McKinstry once again proved his capabilities. It was entertaining for all to watch the banters exchanged and comments emerged before and after the match.

Gor’s Confidence Before Murang’a

Gor Mahia’s head coach, Jonathan McKinstry, promised an entertaining match against Kenyan Premier League (KPL) rookies Murang’a Seal. The match occurred at St. Sebastian Park, and the record Kenyan champions will do their best for maximum points in the KPL Round of 28.

At that point, Gor had already reached the summit with 57 points, nine points higher than their closest rivals, the Kenya Police. McKinstry then shared his thoughts about his opponents, as he thought highly of the top-tier newbies. He expected a tough challenge, as he felt they would be formidable opponents in the preceding leg, and he noticed how cautious they were.

They faced Murang’a Seal at Kasarani in the first leg, and McKinstry noticed how challenging the match was for his team. He stated that he was frustrated as the team clenched for victory. However, he was also expecting an exciting game as the Murang’a Seal would showcase how they’ll defend with their all in front of their fans and venue.

McKinstry also shared his two-thronged approach to facing his opponents when facing a tie. He said that if his opponents are coming out and playing, he knows how much space his team can use. However, when the team’s opponents decide to sit deep like Murang’a did in the first leg, his team will use the ball well.

The weather was also threatening as the team might face heavy rains that would turn the playing surfaces unusable. Many pitches in Kenya had been struggling due to the ongoing rain, but McKinstry was confident that the Murang’a home pitch had a good surface regardless of the weather.

McKinstry’s Injury

On his way to the dressing room at halftime, he fell on the stairs and twisted his ankle. This was why the coach was seen limping after he emerged from the tunnel at the beginning of the second half. The audience could see his pain, but he powered through it.

The pain didn’t distract him from his team’s performance. The Irish coach expressed dissatisfaction with Gor’s performance in the second half. He shared that he’d be happy to endure the pain if he could see the same high-quality performance again. However, he said he might take a couple of days off from training due to this injury.

Gor Mahia’s Performance

All of the match’s audiences could see Gor Mahia’s strength and outstanding techniques. The team entered halftime with a tie (1-1), but the first half was intense. The 10 minutes prior to halftime, Murang’a Seal scored a goal to level their footing against Gor Mahia. Scoring so close to the break gave Murang’a momentum.

Equalising the score changed the dynamic of the match. Murang’a managed to stop Gor Mahia from leading and place pressure on both teams with a tie, setting up an open and competitive scenario for the second half.

Yet, Gor Mahia displayed total dominance, as midfielder Austin Odhiambo started by winning a penalty. Top striker Ben Omala was also a key player, successfully converting penalties during the match.

Omala then secured Gor Mahia’s victory with a late goal deep into additional time. With his 14th goal so far in the season, Omala rose to the top of the scoring charts. It was Gor Mahia’s third consecutive win. With six games left until the season is over, Gor Mahia now emerged with a 12-point lead over Kenya Police.
