In a move to promote sustainable waste management practices, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) of Kenya has issued a public notice directing the transition to the use of biodegradable garbage bags for organic waste collection. The decision comes as a part of the government’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution and promote environmentally friendly practices.

Ban of use of plastic bags for garbage collection in Kenya

According to the notice, within 90 days from April 8, 2024, all organic waste generated by households, private and public sector institutions, religious institutions, and events must be strictly segregated and placed in 100% biodegradable garbage bags or bin liners. This measure is in line with the Sustainable Waste Management Act, 2022, which requires the segregation of non-hazardous waste into organic and non-organic fractions.

The segregated organic waste collected in biodegradable bags will be collected separately, not mixed with other waste types, and transported to designated Material Recovery Facilities for further processing. The use of conventional plastic bags or bin liners for collecting organic waste will be prohibited, ensuring a more effective management of this waste stream.

NEMA has directed all County Governments and private waste service providers licensed by the authority to provide their clients with 100% biodegradable garbage bags or bin liners exclusively.
