Kenya Power has announced that it will invest 258 million Kenyan shillings (about $2 million USD) over the next three years in electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and purchase of electric vehicles and motorcycles.

Kenya Power has already launched its second electric vehicle charging station, located at Stima Plaza in Nairobi. The new charging station cost 6.5 million shillings and has two chargers – one that can charge a vehicle in 1 hour and another that takes 2 hours.

“The future of transportation is electric, and we are excited to lead the way for e-mobility in Kenya,” said Dr. Joseph Siror, CEO of Kenya Power.

By the end of July 2024, Kenya Power plans to install 9 more charging stations at its offices in cities like Nakuru, Mombasa, Kisumu and others. The company has budgeted 20 million shillings per year to build these stations.

In addition to the charging infrastructure, Kenya Power has purchased two heavy-duty electric vehicles for 18 million shillings. The company aims to acquire 9 more electric cars and 25 electric motorcycles by the end of 2024 to use for its operations.

Kenya Power is implementing a new electricity tariff approved by regulators to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles.
