14 students of Kakamega primary school on Monday 3rd February 2020 died while at least 20 were admitted in Kakamega Referral Hospital after a stampede occurred in the institution.

The Kakamega primary school stampede tragedy occurred at around 5:00 pm Monday. It is reported that students fell from the 3rd floor of the five storey school building while running after being released to go home.

What Happened?

One of the injured students in hospital indicated that when they were released to go home, one of them who was leading as they ran down the building’s staircase tried to block them. They then pushed her and she tumbled down the stairs leading to a spiral tumble of the rest behind her.  The chaos and screaming worsened the situation as it created panic.

He further added that such blocking and pushing when they are released normally occurs but no one has ever fell or been injured.

The primary school is located at the heart of Kakamega Town close to  the famous Muliro Gardens. The school has over 3,000 pupils.
