Best Shopping Places in Kakamega Town: Like most medium-sized towns, Kakamega has experienced a growth burst since the devolved government system took effect in 2013. Key infrastructure such as roads, schools, hospitals, and recreational spots have undergone major restructuring while in some cases entirely new ones have sprung up. This vibrancy has also seen some trendy shopping places come up. Below are some popular ones.

1. Mega Mall

Located along the Kakamega – Kisumu highway, it is arguably the largest shopping centre. The mall is home to Tuskys supermarket, which spans the ground and first floors. The mall also houses Standard Chartered Bank, stationery shops, a Bata shoe shop, Kach Fries eatery, Movie stalls, jewellery stores, high-end barber shops and salons coupled with massage parlours, kids’ playing centres, computer gaming zones gym, Auto Express service centre among others. There’s ample parking and enough security.

2. Holden Mall

Located along the Kakamega-Webuye road, the mall is home to Nakumatt supermarket (Nakumatt Kakamega, not to be confused with Nakumatt Midtown) which is known to offer a wide variety of goods. Other shopping stores in the mall include Bata, jewellery stores, African art stalls, a movie shop, offices a bar and restaurants.

3. Canon Awori Street

This street is the most active in the town, more especially at night. The street is dotted with boutiques, phone shops (Safaricom being major), Supermakets, cafes, banks, bars, night clubs and restaurants. The most active spot on the street is the area surrounding club Signature, which is normally frequented by campus students and young adults.

4. Open Air Markets

Strangely enough, Kakamega town does not have a well-defined open air market. This can be attributed to the county government’s initiative to build a market that houses diverse traders. In this market you will find salons, tailors, cereal and grocery traders. Nonetheless, in the evenings you are likely to see traders by the roadside selling vegetables along major roads.
