Why is ridging as a tertiary operation necessary?

Ridging is necessary because;

  • It is a soil conservation measure on sloppy land
  • Used in the planting of root crops eg irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and groundnuts
  • Encourages tuber expansion and easy harvesting of root crops
  • Opening furrows for irrigation or planting crops like sugar-cane
