‘Details of Aden Duale’s University Amendment bill

Majority leader Aden Duale has tabled a bill in parliament that will significantly affect how student elections are run if it goes through. The bill suggests that a student can only serve for a term of one year (or one more). The Bill seeks to stop student leaders from vying for more than two terms.

The Bill further suggest that student governing council officials(for instance SONU, MUSO, TUMSO) will be selected from schools or department (school of arts, school of medicine, education, engineering, e.t.c) student leaders. This means that students will not be involved or there will be no campaigns/elections for SGC positions. This is seen as a move to control the power of students by the government.

The bills says quote unquote “For the purpose of conducting the election of the members of the students council, the student association shall constitute itself into electoral colleges based on either academic departments, school or faculties,” (source)

On Admission;

The University Amendment bill seeks to give public Universities power to partake in the selection/admission of students a role that Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPs) currently plays.
