In anticipation of the global observance of World Wetlands Day on February 2, Kenya is preparing to join the international community in raising awareness about the significance of wetlands. The annual celebration not only serves as a reminder of the Convention on Wetlands’ adoption as an international treaty in 1971, but also emphasizes the need for urgent action to reverse the rapid loss of these crucial ecosystems.

This year’s theme, “Wetlands and Human Well-being,” underscores the interconnectedness between wetlands and the overall health of the planet. The event aims to enhance people’s understanding of the vital role wetlands play in maintaining ecological balance.

The focal point of Kenya’s commemoration will be the Timboroa Dam/Lake Narasha in Uasin Gishu County. The line-up of guests includes Hon. Soipan Tuya, EGH, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry; Mr. Emilio Mugo, NEMA Board Chairman; and Mamo B. Mamo, EBS, Director General of NEMA.
