TSC retooling of teachers handling CBC students

TSC instructions on retooling of teachers handling grades 7 and 8 in CBC

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled plans to retool teachers handling grades 7 and 8 in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA). The training program, set to take place from May 20th to May 30th, 2024, aims to equip educators with the necessary knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes required for the effective implementation of the CBC in junior secondary schools.

The training will follow a “smart cascade” model, involving the training of Master Trainers who will subsequently train Trainers of Trainers (ToTs). The ToTs will then provide professional support during the face-to-face training for teachers at the county level.

The purpose of the retooling exercise is to ensure that teachers handling grades 7 and 8 are well-prepared to deliver the rationalized learning areas in the CBC, ultimately enhancing its implementation in junior secondary education.

The schedule for the face-to-face training is as follows:

  • May 20th to 23rd: Training of Trainers of Trainers (ToTs), including regular and special needs education teachers, at select county venues. Participants will include ToTs drawn from Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), Teacher Educators from Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), Quality Assurance and Standards (QAS) officers, and TSC Sub-County Directors (SCDs).
  • May 24th to 25th: Sub-county and zonal training coordination at county and sub-county levels, involving Master Trainers, ToTs, and County Directors.
  • May 27th to 30th: Retooling of teachers clustered by subject at select county venues. Participants will include teachers of Languages, Science, Mathematics, Humanities, and Technical subjects.

The training will be conducted face-to-face using a multi-agency approach, with teacher capacity development carried out through a smart cascade model. This initiative aims to ensure that teachers are well-equipped to deliver the CBC effectively.
