Testing of the new NTSA smart driving licence has been completed and roll out will start from March of this year. Drivers with Class A licences will however be required to undergo fresh training before they can be issued with the new licence.

According to the NTSA, the smart licence will be loaded with 100 points upon issue. Points will then be deducted any time the licence holder commits a traffic offence.

The driver’s licence will automatically be cancelled once he/she reaches the minimum of 40 points.

Reapplication of a cancelled licence will only be allowed after 6 months.

Drivers guilty of speeding will be suspended for 30 days.

The card will not only be beneficial to police in tracking the behaviour of reckless drivers but also to vehicle owners looking to hire new drivers.
