Reports have emerged that Gatundu South MP was arrested this morning and is being questioned at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters. Kuria was arrested after Kenyans went up in arms complaining that the NCIC, had shown partisanship in letting Mr. Kuria walk free after his spiteful remarks as they went after opposition-friendly individuals.

The controversial post Moses Kuria made on Facebook read: “Kiambu has spoken. They have said wembe ni ule ule. Wangige and Kiambu people are seething with anger. 1 million of their votes were cancelled by 4 people. But they are so ready to do it again. And even more. Manhunt is on tonight for the 200,000 people who did not vote and the 70,000 that voted for that other demon.”

It is not yet clear if comments Kuria made on a widely circulated video were also considered in the motive for arrest. In the video, Kuria said that he will circumcise Raila Odinga with a pair of scissors. Last week the NCIC published a list of 273 individuals under investigation for alleged hate speech. Most of those targeted are said to have made hateful remarks on social media sites including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Reports indicate that Johnson Muthama was also taken into custody over politically volatile remarks he made during the weekend in Kangundo. He was later released. Muthama and Kuria were among six politicians who were arrested over a similar offense mid last year. The six, who earned the moniker ‘Pangani Six,’ decried the poor conditions of the cells they were held in and promised to agitate for reforms.
