Ministry of Education: Teachers cannot be BOM members

Ministry of education through its Principal secretary Julius Ojwan has issued a circular emphasizing that teachers cannot be appointed to the Board of Management (BOM). However, there are a few exceptions.

Appointment of Board of Management Members in primary and secondary schools

On the 5th January 2022, ministry of education principal secretary, Julius Ojwan issued a circular warning that employees of the ministry of education and TSC in basic education institutions are not allowed to be appointed to the board of management. The exception is only for teacher representatives (Reps) and heads of institutions (HOI).

The circular seems to be targeting teachers serving as BOM members in other schools. However, the ministry of education says that they took the move to avoid its officers getting conflicted in carrying out their duties.

Sub-county directors of education have been asked to ensure that the directive is adhered to.
