There have been persistent cries from undergraduate students for helb to increase the amount of loans that they allocate to them per academic year. This is due to the fact, life has changed. The cost of living has gone up. Therefore, the amount of loan that was awarded to students 10 years ago does not make any sense in this hard economic times.

The cry however seems to have fallen on a deaf ear. The helb chief executive office Mr Charles Mutuma has in several occasions been heard saying that helb does not have the financial ability to increase the loans. The HELB boss has also defended the organization he leads that the number of students that are being admitted to university yearly has increased subsequently increasing the number of helb applicants. This has made it difficult to increase the funds any further.

However, there is a group of students that receives an extraordinary large amount of helb loan. These are postgraduate students. According to a post that was shared by helb on their social   media platform and which is available in a screen shot below; helb awards Doctor of Philosophy (Phd) students Ksh. 60,000-200,000 per year and Masters Students Ksh. 60,000-200,000 per year.helb loan kenya

Undergraduate Students have also complained for a while that even the little money that helb disburses to them has become a hell of time to get. Unlike in the past, Helb has become unreliable. Some students go for more than a whole semester without receiving their helb loans. Somebody must be sleeping on his job.
