The government has underscored its dedication to the ongoing negotiations for two international legal instruments aimed at preparing the world for future pandemics. Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki emphasized the importance of public participation in shaping these critical agreements.

In her address at a stakeholder consultative meeting today, PS Muriuki expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for his leadership in pandemic preparedness and response efforts, which are crucial for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Kenya.

Highlighting recent discussions between President Ruto and World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the PS stated that Kenya is advocating for the development of a pandemic treaty that aligns with the government’s UHC initiatives, such as Primary Health Care Networks and the Social Health Insurance Fund.

The meeting aimed to sensitize national stakeholders about the ongoing negotiations and gather input for the treaty’s final stages. PS Muriuki urged constructive engagement, stressing the need to address stakeholders’ identified gaps and concerns.

Drawing from the experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, PS Muriuki emphasized the importance of equitable access to essential medical supplies, financing, and technology transfer. She identified opportunities to enhance the International Health Regulations (2005) to ensure fair global response mechanisms.

The PS pledged continuous stakeholder engagement throughout the negotiation process, with plans to adapt the instruments to the local context after the World Health Assembly in May 2024.

PS Muriuki acknowledged the support of partners in convening the meeting and officially declared the National Stakeholders’ Roundtable Consultative meeting open.
