Jamhuri day is Kenya’s national holiday that is celebrated on 12th December every year. It’s also known as a republic day since it’s the day Kenyan became a republic. It was declared a public holiday for Kenyans to honor this day and remember how far they have come since December 12th, 1963.

On Jamhuri day, schools, government facilities, and most businesses are closed. Kenyans gather at a specified stadium to enjoy military displays and various entertainment. The president of the republic of Kenya also attends the national event where he inspects a military parade and delivers a live speech. The president also awards state commendations to various leaders and individuals for their outstanding service to the country.
County governors also preside over the Jamhuri day celebrations in their county.

People in Kenya Celebrate Jamhuri Day in Various Ways. Some visit historical sites like Fort Jesus in Mombasa, Lamu old town, Hell’s Gate National park in Naivasha, and Koobi Fora in Turkana while others attend sporting events at Kasarani National Stadium. For others, it is an opportunity to spend time with the family.
