First things first, what is a final year research project? A final year research project is normally conducted at the end of your course; it might be in your 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th depending on the duration that completion of your course takes. You should not confuse a final year research project with a thesis because a thesis is normally done by postgraduate students while a final year research project is normally done by fourth years (am assuming you are doing a degree course that lasts for four years)

Second step, how do I begin doing my research project? Normally you have to come up with a topic that is related to the course that you are doing (check here for sample final year research project topics). After coming up with the topic, write a short description about the research project topic and submit it to your lecturer for approval. Upon approval of your research project topic you will be assigned a supervisor whom you will be working with until you complete your research paper. The supervisor will ask you to write a research proposal or outline about your research project (note that not all supervisor will ask you to write a proposal, others may ask you to begin working on the project immediately after approval). The Research project proposal contains;

Background of the Study

This is a short description of your research project topic.

  • Statement of the Problem

This is a brief description of the problem that you will be researching on. A statement of the problem will make people understand why you believe your research will be better than previous research conducted on the same topic.

  • Research objectives

This is what you intend to achieve out of the study or research.

  • Research Question

Research questions are derived from research objectives

  • Significance of the Study

In significance of the study you are supposed to explain the positive impacts that your research will create or the problems that your research will solve.

  • Scope, Limitations and Delimitations

Scope is the extent to which your research will cover. It involves the number of participants in your research. Limitation is the extent to which your research will cover.

  • Literature review

Literature review refers to previous work done by other scholars on the same topic you are researching on

  • Research Methodology
  • Target Population
  • Research Design

This is the way in which you will collect and compile your data. Do not confuse research design with research methodology.

  • Sample and Sampling Procedures
  • Ethical considerations and Issues
  • Conclusion
  • References

The research project proposal is normally 5-9 pages but the number of pages may differ depending on the instructions of your supervisor. After submitting your proposal or outline, your supervisor will go through it before giving you a go ahead to do it.

Third step, you are now ready to begin your research project. What should a research project contain? A research project contains;

Chapter 1 of the Research Project

  • Introduction
  • Background of the study
  • Rationale of the study
  • Significance of the study
  • Aims of the study
  • Statement of the problem
  • Research methodology

  • Literature review

Chapter 3 of research method

  • Qualitative research design
