Ministry of Energy Hosts Eastern Africa Power Pool Steering Committee Meeting

Ministry of Energy and Petroleum CS Davis Chirchir today hosted the 30th Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) Steering Committee meeting to discuss the countries' efforts in seeking solutions to Africa’s rapidly growing need for green and reliable energy.  Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror and KenGen CEO Peter Njenga also joined other energy utilities CEOs from the EAPP.

The three-day event that started on 26th February 2024 brought together senior officials and development partners. Several issues were discussed, including ongoing and planned activities at EAPP and an amendment to the Inter-Governmental and Inter-Utility MOUs.

Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP)

According to Kenya Power, The EAPP currently has thirteen (13) member countries that signed the Inter-Governmental Memorandum of Understanding (IGMOU) and fourteen utilities that signed the Inter-Utility Memorandum of Understanding (IUMOU). The pool comprises the following countries: Burundi, Djibouti, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Libya. South Sudan and Somalia joined recently.

The EAPP’s General Secretariat is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a mandate to coordinate the power pool's development, functioning, and operation.
