Difference between internship and attachment
Most companies use the two terms interchangeably when posting available opportunities. However, there is a difference between an internship and an industrial attachment.
Internship is used for preparing students who have graduated to be ready for the job market. It lasts between 3 to 12 months. Students can use the experience gained during the internship period to apply for jobs. Graduates who are on internship are referred to as interns. Some companies do pay interns a monthly stipend while others do not pay.
NOTE: Most companies in Kenya require interns to have a personal accident cover before they report for internship. You can get it from CIC insurance at a cost of Kenya shillings 500. It is also important that you apply for a certificate of good and have it on standby just in case it is needed.
Industrial Attachment is used for introducing students who have not graduated to a work setting. Industrial attachment is part of the academic program and it lasts for a period of 3 months. Students are tested on how they apply the knowledge and skills they have gained during their study period. At the end of the attachment period, Attachees are required to submit a report to the attachment supervisor or faculty coordinator for grading (Here is a detailed article on how attachment works). You will not be paid while on attachment.
The “Date” column in the table below is for the application deadline while the “name” column is for the job description.
In order to identify whether the opportunity is an internship or an attachment, we will put it in brackets or clarify it in the name column.
