President William Ruto on June 1, 2023, announced that the National Open University of Kenya will receive its charter later this month and will officially open its doors later this year. The National Open University of Kenya will provide online degree and diploma courses to all qualified students. This means students will apply for courses and study online without the need to step into a school compound.
The government says that the primary goal of the National Open University is to address the issue of the high costs of university education in Kenya. By offering courses online, the university aims to significantly reduce the expenses related to admission, tuition fees, accommodation, transportation, and other costs incurred by students attending physical campuses. This will fulfill the dreams of students who aspire to pursue higher education but may be hindered by financial constraints.
The National Open University of Kenya also aims to promote inclusivity and accessibility in education. By adopting an online learning model, the university will enable students from all walks of life, regardless of their geographical location, to access quality university education. This approach will particularly benefit those living in remote areas or facing mobility challenges, as they will no longer be restricted by physical barriers in their pursuit of academic excellence.
The government says that you will be required to pay at least Ksh. 105,000 to pursue a degree a the OUK.
