“Are you married here.? Wow look the drug dealer also has girlfriends in his den.” One of them said sarcastically.Clearly , he knew they were friends and not lovers. Lucy was worried because she didn’t know what Joe had done. Lucy never doubted Joe he was her best friend and her confidante. He was that chocolate bar that kept her busy and happy in a moody day. Joe retreated inside the house and the three policemen quickly walked in. They were probably thinking that he wanted to escape through the window. “They should know that Joe doesn’t run away from a problem but he boldly faces it.” Lucy told Lisa who held her hand and pulled her aside.
“Hey do you think Joe is really guilty?” Lisa was whispering in Lucy’s ear. “Just shut up! Don’t you trust Joe? Lisa we have to stand by his side idiot.” Lucy pat Lisa’s shoulder and she nodded. The policemen had put handcuffs on Joe and were all asking him questions at the same time. They were talking about cocaine, injections and a gun. One of them held a transparent paper bag where they had kept everything illegal from Joe’s house. “You can ask him one question at a time. Mishandling him and asking so many questions at the same time won’t change the fact that he is innocent.” Lucy interrupted. “Shut up you spoilt little brat. Or this will go through your head.” One copsaid pointing his gun at her. Nothing would shake the trust she had for Joe and she knew that the ordeal would be over soon. Lucy felt pain knowing that he was going to face torture for a crime he didn’t commit. Tears ran her face as they led Joe away to the police car. Joe looked at her and blinked he always did that when he wanted Lucy to smile so she faked a smile for him and crossed her arms in a hug and he smiled too. There was hope . Lisa and Lucy hugged and walked home silently. Joe would never engage in something that would jeopardize his reputation. It was the second day without sleep and Lucy’s eyes were twitching she lay on the couch, closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep. She wanted to forget about everything for a while but she couldn’t sleep. She went to bed but she couldn’t sleep there either. She borrowed some of Lisa’s sleeping pills and lay to rest.
She woke up the next morning feeling fresh and ready for the day. She took her books and went to school. Lisa had an evening class so she extended her sleep. Sometimes Lucy envied her time table because it had so much free time. At the gate she met her class representative who told her that the afternoon class had been cancelled. Wow that just felt like icecream on a hot day. Mondays were never her best days and even now she still hates them. The morning class was an accounts lecture. She saw the lecturer walk into class and saw him leave. She didn’t understand anything that happened in between because she was thinking about how she could get Joe out. Erick was coming towards her wearing a big smile as he said hey and sat next to her. “Hey Lucy aren’t you excited about the trip to the central bank. We will get to learn some operations that this guy blabbers about. Hey are you listening? ” Erick sounded disappointed. He had tried so much to lure her into dating him. He always came to her rescue any time she needed him. Lucy always helped him any time he needed her hand. She kept him as a friend because she did not want to date him for the reason that they were both light skinned, she preferred her coffee black and they were classmates and never would she date a classmate.
“Hey Erick am sorry am so much passive. I can’t concentrate because am thinking about my best friend. He was taken to the cell yesterday. I don’t know how to help him. Oh goodness he had not finished his drugs prescriptions yet .” Lucy said as she hurried out. She could hear Erick following her. “Joe is inside the cell? Drugs prescription? Lucy what’s happening here. Lucy! Lucy!” He couldn’t move with her pace. All she wanted was to get to Joe faster. Luckily the drugs were in Lucy’s house . Maybe he was dying of headache from the accident. Erick was still following her. On their way inside the cell they met Leona. “She’s a witch who is everywhere.” Lucy told Erick as they walked in. “Do you understand that you are not supposed to keep someone here for twenty four hours. ” Lucy asked an officer who rudely told her that they would take Joe to prison as he awaits his case hearing. “Well you should know that I won’t let you do anything to him.” She snapped. Joe was having a head ache when she arrived. Erick was pestering her so much about Joe. She had to tell him everything but he did not seem to help. He just hugged her and asked to take care of Joe and meet him in the evening. What a friend? She thought. Lucy did not understand how one could be that insane. Joe was eating some snacks she had brought for him. He looked weak ,sad and angry. She let him eat in peace then question him later.
The ugly policeman kept looking at his wrist watch most likely counting how many hours to go before locking up Joe in prison. “Joe what is wrong with you? Why are you so angry? Nothing will happen to you. I promise my dear.” Lucy said holding his hands. He held her hands too. “Well I trust you so much and am mad not sad. Am furious not angry. That Leona is a bitch. You see that ugly policeman there, he is Leona’s accomplice. I saw her give him a lot of money. I was hiding here so they would not see me. ” He drew closer and our foreheads touched. “Lucy am worried about what Leona is up to. I need to protect you and Lisa . She is dangerous I sus..” He was cut short by a guard. “Joel Baraka get ready you are leaving for prison in ten minutes. “… Read Part 6 here
