The two main disadvantages of investing in the bar business in Kenya is police bribes, licenses, and unreliable employees.

  • Police and county askaris bribes: Even if you have all the required documents, some police or county askaris will always want their share. If you don’t give them, they will look for the slightest mistakes and mess up with your business. You must be in good books with them for your bar business to prosper.
  • Unreliable employees: If you are not going to run the business yourself, then be aware that it is hard to get a reliable bartender or waiter.
  • Licenses: You must also have all the required licenses (Music copyright, County Council, Health, etc.). If you are starting, the licenses can be costly and take time to be ready.
