Here is a detailed procedure on how students should file for nill income returns. There is nothing that is required other than your KRA pin
KRA portal is heavy and may not be supported on all mobile browsers. If you want to make your work easier, go to the nearest cyber and file nill returns or borrow any student a laptop and file your returns. It takes less than 5 minutes.
After you have filed your returns, login into your iTax portal, then click on the useful links tab> select consult and reprint acknowledgment receipt and certificates >select the business process (Taxpayer Return Processing) and sub process (Original Return Filing) then enter the tax period and consult. You will see a link to download the receipt.
To check if you have successfully filed KRA tax returns, login to iTax portal, click on returns, view filed return then select tax obligation as income tax resident individual, enter the return period and submit. You will be able to view all your filed returns
Negative figures or number when filing your tax returns mean that KRA is supposed to refund you. On other hand, a positive figure means the amount of tax that you need to pay. Zero figure means that you do not have any tax due or refund. You can apply for a refund from the KRA portal.
