  • Presence of water hyacinth that limit movement of water vessels.
  • Underdevelopment/dilapidated port infrastructure
  • Production of similar goods among the East African countries limiting use of ports.
  • Low/lack of industrial output.
  • Mistrust between East African countries limiting full tapping of the waterway potential.
  • Lack of prope linkage with railway or roads that feed the ports
