Characteristics of the Great Rift Valley include;

  • It has lakes within it such has Naivasha, Nakuru, Elementaita, Baringo and Bogoria.
  • It has block mountains/tilt blocks e.g West Kenya tilt block
  • Volcanic activity within its floors lead to formation of volcanoes e.g Longonot and Menengai.
  • Its height varies between 600m around lake Magadi to 1800m around Lake Naivasha.
  • Step faulting is common.
  • It has major fault scarps such as Elgeyo, Mau, Nyandarua among others.
